Arthroscopy is keyhole surgery of a joint. A thin camera is passed into the knee or shoulder through a small incision, so the surgeon can see inside and repair torn ligaments, meniscus or cartilage without opening the joint.

In appropriate patients it generally means smaller scars, less pain and an earlier return to normal activity than open surgery. It is recommended only after assessment shows it is the right option.
